Book nine to twelve months ahead for peak weeks — July and August in Komodo, Christmas and New Year in Raja Ampat, and any Banda Sea crossing. Three to six months is comfortable for shoulder season. Last-minute genuinely works in the quiet months and almost never works for a large boat on a fixed school holiday. Vessel availability, not price, is the binding constraint: there are only so many good phinisi, and the best ones are booked by people who committed early.

What sells out first?
Not the cheapest boats. The largest and the best-run ones, in that order.
- Big-capacity vessels. A group of sixteen has perhaps a dozen realistic options in the whole country for a given week. A couple has hundreds.
- Christmas and New Year. The single most contested fortnight of the year, in every region.
- July and August in Komodo. European summer plus Indonesian school holidays plus the best conditions of the year.
- Misool weeks. Long itineraries, limited operators, and a fixed October–April window.
- Banda crossings. Two windows, a handful of boats, and a repeat-guest waiting list on the good ones.
The corollary is useful: if your dates are flexible by a fortnight and your group is under ten, you have far more leverage than the scarcity narrative suggests. Which region those flexible dates should point at is the subject of our monsoon map.
A working calendar for a 2027 trip

Two items on that list get skipped and cause trouble. The buffer night — arrive the day before boarding, always; the reasons are in our Labuan Bajo arrival guide. And insurance that actually covers liveaboard diving and remote evacuation, which many standard policies do not.
How do deposits and cancellations usually work?
Structures vary by operator and vessel, but the common Indonesian charter shape is:
- Deposit to hold the boat, typically a meaningful percentage, payable to a company account against an invoice.
- Balance due a set period before departure — often 60 to 90 days.
- Cancellation on a sliding scale, tightening as the date approaches, because the boat cannot be resold at short notice.
- Force majeure and weather handled separately — a captain rerouting for safety is not a cancellation, and a good contract says so explicitly.

Does booking early cost more or less?
Usually less, and always with better choice. Indonesian charter pricing does not work like airline pricing — there is no algorithm dropping the fare as departure nears. What exists is a small supply of good boats and a growing demand for them. Early booking buys the vessel you want at a stable rate; late booking buys whatever is left.
The genuine exception is the quiet month with a boat already committed to a region. Then a last-minute enquiry can find real value. It is a strategy for the flexible, not a plan for a family of eight in August.
