The word “phinisi” describes a rig, not a hull. According to UNESCO, which in 2017 inscribed “The Art of Boatbuilding in South Sulawesi” on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the term refers to a type of two-masted rigging carrying seven to eight sails, a tradition centred on the villages of Ara and Tana Beru and historically sailed by Bugis and Makassarese seafarers.
