You can hold a wedding ceremony aboard a phinisi in Indonesia, and couples do it every season — but a ceremony at sea is a symbolic one. Indonesian law requires a marriage to be solemnised under one of the recognised religions and registered with the civil authorities ashore, so the practical pattern is a legal formality on land and the ceremony people actually remember on the deck of a wooden schooner. Celebration charters run from a single afternoon to a full multi-night voyage, with day-charter capacity often well above sleeping capacity: many phinisi that sleep ten to twenty guests can host considerably more for a reception. Rates follow private-charter bands — indicatively IDR 28–45 million per day on standard vessels, USD 2,500–8,000 per night on premium ones, whole boat.

What is the legal position, exactly?
Two things need separating, and most wedding pages blur them deliberately.
The legal marriage. Under Indonesian law, a marriage is valid when performed according to the religion of the parties and then registered — with the Office of Religious Affairs for Muslim couples, or with the Civil Registry Office (Kantor Catatan Sipil) for non-Muslim couples. Foreign nationals normally also need a Certificate of No Impediment or equivalent declaration from their embassy or consulate in Indonesia, along with passports, birth certificates and evidence of any prior divorce or bereavement, often with certified translations. Requirements vary by nationality, by religion and by regency, and they change.
The ceremony aboard. A ceremony at sea — a celebrant, vows, rings, a blessing — is symbolic. It is deeply meaningful and it photographs beautifully, but it is not what makes you legally married. A captain of a chartered Indonesian vessel has no authority to solemnise a marriage.
The clean solution most couples use: complete the legal registration ashore, usually in Bali where the process is best-supported, then hold the ceremony and celebration on the boat. Some couples do the legal step in their home country months earlier and treat the whole Indonesian event as symbolic. Indicative market bands, not quotations. The critical distinction: day capacity and sleeping capacity are different numbers. Charter phinisi typically run 25–55 metres with three to eight guest cabins, six to twenty overnight guests and a crew of eight to eighteen. Deck space and safety certification govern how many people can be aboard for a reception, and that figure is often well above the berth count. If your guest list is forty and you want everyone to sleep aboard, that is two boats, not one.
Where do celebration charters sail from?
Bali (Benoa or Serangan) is the practical choice when most guests are flying in, when you need hair, makeup, florists, cake and photography from an established supplier base, and when the legal registration is happening ashore. Styling, catering and the practical realities at sea
Everything is possible on a phinisi; some things are harder than they look on a Pinterest board.
- Florals and arches work well but need to be built for wind. Anything tall and light becomes a sail. Experienced Bali florists know this; suppliers new to boats often do not.
- Catering is either the boat’s own galley — every charter phinisi carries a chef, and on many the crew outnumbers the guests — or an external caterer loaded before departure. Confirm which, and confirm the plated versus buffet decision early, because deck layout dictates it.
- Cake travels badly in swell and heat. Order it for delivery to the boat rather than to the hotel, keep tiers modest, and have a backup dessert.
- Sound needs to be brought aboard; most boats have background audio, not a PA. For vows in wind, a small battery PA with a lapel or handheld microphone is the difference between a ceremony guests can hear and one they cannot.
- Photography and drones — brief the pilot on the boat’s rigging and the wind gradient behind the sails, and check the operating rules for the specific area, particularly inside national parks where drone use may require permission. Golden hour on a wooden deck is exceptional; midday sun on a white dress is not.
- Dress and shoes — barefoot or flat is the only sensible answer on teak. Long trains and tenders do not mix; plan the boarding.
What months should you pick?
April to November for southern Indonesia, which covers both Bali and Komodo. The south-east monsoon of roughly June to September is the driest period; April–May and October–November are the calm shoulders with softer pricing. The north-west monsoon from roughly December to March brings rain and swell, and while boats still sail, it is not the window to stake a once-only event on. Within any month, plan the ceremony for the late afternoon — wind typically eases toward sunset, and the light is better anyway.
Have a weather plan and put it in writing. The best charters for events include a defined alternative: a sheltered anchorage instead of an open crossing, an earlier or later ceremony slot, or a shoreside backup venue on standby. Ask what happens if the captain declares the planned anchorage unsafe on the day. An operator who has not thought about this has not run a wedding.

Who is this for — and who should not do it?
Right for couples wanting fewer than fifty guests, anyone who values a setting over a ballroom, vow renewals, proposals, and families marking a milestone together. The captain moves the boat to sheltered water and the ceremony timing shifts. Cancellation is rare in the dry season. Agree the contingency in writing at booking — that is the single most important clause in an event charter.
Can we bring our own celebrant, photographer and florist?
Yes. Give us the supplier list early so load-in, tender space and crew assistance can be scheduled. Suppliers who have worked on boats before are worth paying more for.
Is alcohol allowed on board?
Generally yes, with arrangements varying by vessel — some boats charge corkage, some supply. Confirm at booking, and remember that alcohol and tender transfers need managing at the end of the night.
Can guests stay ashore and join for the day?
Yes. This is the most common structure for a larger wedding: the couple and immediate family sleep aboard, the wider guest list joins for the ceremony day and returns to hotels afterwards. Tender capacity and boarding times need planning.
How far ahead should we book?
Nine to twelve months for a peak-season date, and earlier if a specific boat matters to you. The best vessels take one event at a time.
Can the ceremony happen at a specific location, like Pink Beach?
Often yes, subject to national park rules, permissions and conditions on the day. Beach ceremonies inside Komodo National Park require the operator to arrange access properly — ask for it in writing rather than assuming.
