What does a seven-night Raja Ampat itinerary cover?
Day 1 — Sorong to the Dampier Strait. Board at Sorong after your flight into Domine Eduard Osok (SOQ). Safety and dive brief, lunch under way, and an afternoon check dive in easy water as the boat crosses toward the Dampier Strait. Evening anchorage in the lee of Kri or Mansuar.
Day 2 — Cape Kri and Sardine Reef. The Dampier Strait’s headline day. Cape Kri is the site that made Raja Ampat’s reputation for fish density; Sardine Reef and Chicken Reef deliver walls of schooling fish when the current runs. Three dives, plus a night dive for those who want it.
Day 3 — Blue Magic and Manta Sandy. Blue Magic is a seamount that collects pelagics on moving water. Manta Sandy is a cleaning station where reef mantas queue over sand patches while divers kneel behind a marked line — there are strict rules here, and guides enforce them. Snorkellers get a good chance from the surface when the mantas are shallow.
Day 4 — Fam and Penemu. North-west to the Fam group. Melissa’s Garden is the postcard hard-coral garden of Raja Ampat, shallow, bright and easy. In the afternoon, the Penemu viewpoint climb over the lagoon — a stepped boardwalk to the vista that appears on every Raja Ampat cover photograph.
Day 5 — Passage to Wayag. A longer repositioning north, usually overnight or across a morning. Wayag is the far north-west: mushroom-shaped karst islands, turquoise lagoons, baby blacktip sharks in the shallows.
Day 6 — Wayag lagoon and viewpoint. The Wayag viewpoint hike is short but genuinely scrambly — hands-and-feet on sharp limestone. Kayaking the lagoon is the alternative and is arguably better. Afternoon dives on the outer reefs, then start the return south.
Day 7 — Dampier again, southbound. Back to the strait for the sites the tide did not favour earlier in the week, then the final sunset at anchor.
Day 8 — Sorong. Alongside after breakfast; transfers to SOQ.

Raja Ampat is tidal, not seasonal, in its currents. The dive guide reads the tide table each morning and the itinerary flexes accordingly. Anyone with fewer than about thirty logged dives should say so at booking — it changes which sites the guide selects, not whether you can come.
Is there a version for non-divers?
Yes, and it is a genuinely good trip rather than a consolation. The same seven days give: snorkelling at Melissa’s Garden and the Fam shallows, surface time at Manta Sandy when the mantas are up, the Penemu viewpoint, the Wayag lagoon by kayak and paddleboard, birding for red birds-of-paradise on Gam at dawn, village visits where the boat’s schedule allows, and a great deal of hammock. Roughly a third of guests on a typical Raja Ampat phinisi do not dive.

What is the Raja Ampat marine park permit?
Every visitor needs the Raja Ampat marine park entry permit — the PIN card, formally an environmental services card — which is valid for one calendar year, not per trip. It is widely quoted in recent years at IDR 1,000,000 for foreign nationals and IDR 500,000 for Indonesians, with earlier structures listing IDR 700,000 and IDR 425,000. It is sold at the Raja Ampat tourism counters in Sorong and Waisai, and on a charter the operator normally arranges it on your behalf, collecting payment with your final balance.
Be careful with the figure: it is set by district regulation and has changed more than once. Treat any number you read online, including this one, as approximate and confirm the current rate before travel. Bring your passport and a copy of your dive certification, and keep the card — if you return within the same calendar year, it is still valid.
How do you get to Sorong — and why the buffer night matters
Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok airport (SOQ) is roughly three and a half to four and a quarter hours from Jakarta, about two hours from Makassar and about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Manado. Nearly all routings involve at least one connection, and Indonesian domestic delays compound.
Always book a buffer night in Sorong before embarkation. Boats leave on the tide, and a missed connection with no buffer means missing the boat entirely. If you are travelling independently to Waisai instead, the Sorong–Waisai fast ferry takes about two hours with typically a morning and an afternoon sailing, but timetables change — the buffer night applies there too.
Who should book the seven-night northern route?
Right for first-time Raja Ampat visitors, divers with an Advanced certification and current experience, mixed dive and non-dive groups, and anyone who wants Wayag in the same trip as the Dampier Strait.
