Indonesia has no single best month — it has two monsoons and a rotating set of seas. Broadly: Raja Ampat from October to April, Komodo from April to November, the Banda Sea only in the two narrow windows of March–April and September–October, and Bali–Komodo crossings between April and November. Pick the month first and the region second, not the other way round. That single reversal removes most of the disappointment in Indonesian charter planning.
What are the two monsoons doing?
The north-west monsoon runs roughly December to March. It is the wetter season, with more convective rain, and it pushes weather into the southern islands from the north-west. The south-east monsoon runs roughly June to September — drier in the south, but windier in exposed water, with a persistent trade-wind swell that matters more to a boat than rainfall ever does.
April–May and October–November are the transitions, and they are the sweet spots on many routes: lighter winds, calmer seas, and the reason serious operators schedule their long crossings then.

Seasons are patterns, not guarantees. Every itinerary in this table is subject to what the captain sees on the day.
Komodo: April to November, and the wet-season alternative
The practical main season is April to November. But Komodo runs year-round, and the December–March version is a genuinely different trip rather than a lesser one: itineraries shift to the south of the park, where plankton blooms bring cooler, greener water and often outstanding manta activity, at the cost of visibility and rougher crossings.
If you want the classic north-Komodo pinnacles — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock — come between April and November. If you want mantas and you do not mind a bumpy passage, the wet season has a case. The site-by-site detail is in our Komodo dive site guide.
Raja Ampat: October to April
The main season is October to April, when the seas are calmest across the Dampier Strait, Fam and Misool. From June to September the south-east monsoon brings stronger winds that affect exposed sites, and the long passage south to Misool is the first thing to suffer. Raja Ampat is not closed in those months, but the itinerary narrows.
The Banda Sea: two windows only
Banda Sea crossings are scheduled in March–April and September–October, and in no other months, because the open Banda Sea is genuinely rough during the core monsoons. Typical crossings run ten to twelve nights between Ambon or Sorong and Alor or Maumere, taking in Banda Neira, the volcanic islands and the hammerhead sites.
These windows are the most inflexible dates in Indonesian chartering. A boat committed to a Banda crossing in September cannot be in Komodo that week, which is exactly why fleet repositioning drives availability. The route itself is described on our Spice Islands voyage page.

On Cenderawasih, one honest note: the whale sharks around the Kwatisore bagans are resident year-round. June to October is preferred for sea conditions, not because the animals are more likely to be there. Nobody should promise you a sighting in any month.

What does repositioning do to price?
Fleets move. Boats that spend the northern winter in Raja Ampat sail west and south for the Komodo season, and back east in the autumn. Three consequences for your wallet:
- Peak season costs more. July–August in Komodo and Christmas–New Year in Raja Ampat are the top of the market in both price and competition for boats.
- Transition months are the value window. April–May and October–November often have both good conditions and softer pricing.
- Repositioning legs can be a bargain. A boat that has to sail from Komodo to Sorong anyway will sometimes sell that passage well.

What is the best month to sail in Indonesia?
April–May and October–November are the strongest all-round windows because they work across the widest range of regions.
Can I do Komodo and Raja Ampat in one trip?
Not on one boat in one week — they are far apart with near-opposite seasons. April and October are the months where a two-leg trip with a flight between them makes sense.
Is the wet season worth avoiding entirely?
No. Raja Ampat is at its best from December to March, and south Komodo has excellent manta activity then. It is a different trip, not a worse one.
When can I cross the Banda Sea?
March–April and September–October. Outside those windows, responsible operators do not schedule it.
Which month is cheapest?
Generally the shoulders — and repositioning legs. Avoid July, August and the Christmas–New Year fortnight if price is the priority.
Does rain ruin a charter?
Rarely. Tropical rain is usually short and heavy. Wind and swell affect a trip far more than rainfall does.
Are whale sharks seasonal in Cenderawasih Bay?
They are resident year-round near the bagans. June–October is chosen for sea conditions. No sighting is ever guaranteed.
How far ahead should I book for peak weeks?
Nine to twelve months for July, August, Christmas and New Year. Three to six months is workable in the shoulders.
