A phinisi is built on an open beach, without blueprints, cranes or a dry dock. Konjo, Bugis and Makassar craftsmen at Tana Beru, Ara and Bira in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi, lay out the hull by proportion and memory, fasten planks with wooden dowels, and work for roughly a year on a large charter hull. UNESCO inscribed the practice — “Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi” — on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 7 December 2017.
Where does this actually happen?
In Bonto Bahari district, Bulukumba Regency, on the south-eastern tip of South Sulawesi. Three villages carry the tradition: Tana Beru, where the largest hulls rise straight off the sand; Ara; and Bira. Bulukumba’s nickname says the rest — Butta Panrita Lopi, the land of the master boatbuilders.
What strikes visitors first is the absence of infrastructure. No shed, no gantry, no shipyard gate. Hulls thirty and forty metres long stand propped on timber shores a few metres above the tideline, and the sea is the launch ramp.
What timber goes into a hull?

Timber is seasoned before it is worked — sometimes for a very long time — and pieces are chosen for the shape already in the grain rather than forced into shape afterwards. A builder walking a timber yard is looking for a curve, not a plank.
It is worth saying plainly that hardwood supply is the central pressure on this craft today. Sourcing has tightened, prices have risen, and responsible builders now work with certified and reclaimed timber. Anyone romanticising the tradition without acknowledging that is only telling half the story.
How is the hull laid out without drawings?
This is the part that surprises naval architects. There is no lines plan. The punggawa — the master builder — holds the proportions in memory and transmits them by working alongside apprentices for years. Dimensions are set by ratio: length to beam, beam to depth, the rise of the stem, the sweep of the sheer. The eye, trained across generations, does the work a drawing would do elsewhere.
The build sequence is roughly this:
- Keel laying. The ironwood keel is set on shores on the beach, accompanied by ritual. This is a ceremonial moment as much as a structural one.
- Stem and sternpost. Fitted to the keel, establishing the hull’s profile.
- Planking first. Unusually, much of the shell goes up before the internal frames — a shell-first method, with planks edge-joined and pinned.
- Dowel fastening. Wooden dowels driven through the plank edges lock the strakes together. The characteristic joinery of the tradition.
- Ribs and frames. Fitted inside the shell once the hull form is established.
- Caulking and sealing. Seams packed and payed to make the hull tight.
- Decks, superstructure and interior. Where a modern charter build diverges sharply from a cargo hull.
- Launch. The hull is walked into the sea on rollers and lines, with the whole village pulling — and with blessing rituals again marking the moment.
What does UNESCO actually recognise?
Precision matters here, because the citation is often misquoted. On 7 December 2017, at the 12th session of the Intergovernmental Committee, UNESCO inscribed “Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The inscription recognises the craft — the knowledge, the ritual and the transmission of skill — not any particular vessel, and not the tourism industry that now depends on it. A charter boat is not “UNESCO-listed”. The tradition that produced it is. A charter phinisi is therefore a hybrid: a traditionally built wooden hull carrying a thoroughly modern set of systems. That is not a compromise to apologise for — it is what makes the hull viable in 2027 — but it does mean nobody should tell you their boat is built exactly as it was two centuries ago. What survives is the hull-building knowledge, and that is remarkable enough without embellishment.
Can you go and see it?
Yes. Tana Beru is reachable by road from Makassar, and the beach yards are open to respectful visitors. Ask before photographing people at work, do not climb on hulls, and buy something locally.
