Raja Ampat is not one destination but three, and choosing between them is the most consequential decision in planning the trip. The Dampier Strait delivers fish density and manta cleaning stations within short hops of Sorong. Fam and Penemu offer coral gardens and the karst viewpoints everyone photographs. Misool, far to the south, has the pinnacles, the soft coral and the lagoons — and needs an overnight passage each way. Seven nights covers Dampier and Fam properly. Misool needs nine to twelve.

The mistake people make is buying seven nights and asking for all four. Something gets cut, and it is usually the diving, because passage time is not negotiable. Our 7-night Raja Ampat itinerary is built honestly around Dampier and Fam; the Misool charter is the longer voyage that does the south justice.

Manta Sandy deserves a note. There is a physical line of rocks behind which divers kneel, and it exists because too many people once crowded the station. Stay behind it. Cleaning stations survive on discipline, and Raja Ampat’s have survived because the community that owns the reef enforces it.
Fam and Penemu: the pretty half
Melissa’s Garden is the reason the region is called a coral triangle epicentre — a shallow hard-coral plateau in clear water, easy current, good for photographers and equally good for snorkellers. Keruo and the surrounding channels are similarly gentle. Above the water, the Penemu viewpoint is a stepped climb to the classic panorama of karst islets in turquoise channels.
This is where mixed groups work best: divers on the plateau, non-divers snorkelling the same reef or walking the viewpoint. If your party is split, our non-diver’s guide explains how the parallel programme is run.
Misool: worth the passage

Misool is also where the conservation story is most visible. Large no-take zones have been in place for years, and the difference in biomass is something you can see rather than something you have to be told. When should you come?
The main season is October to April, when the seas are calmest. From June to September the south-east monsoon brings stronger winds that affect exposed sites, particularly around Misool where the passage itself becomes the constraint. This is roughly the opposite of the Komodo calendar — useful if you are trying to build a two-region year, and the reason a single trip cannot do both regions well. Frequently asked questions
Is Raja Ampat harder diving than Komodo?
Generally a little gentler, with strong exceptions — Blue Magic, Sardine Reef and Manta Ridge run real current. Komodo’s top sites are more consistently demanding.
Can I see mantas in Raja Ampat?
Cleaning stations at Manta Sandy, Manta Ridge and Magic Mountain are reliable sites, seasonally variable, and never guaranteed. We do not promise sightings.
Do I need a reef hook?
For Manta Ridge and the exposed seamounts, yes. Bring your own.
How many dives per day?
Typically three, plus a night dive on some itineraries, scheduled around current and passage time.
Is Misool worth the extra nights?
If you dive seriously, yes. If your priority is landscape and easy water, Fam and Penemu deliver more per night.
Where do charters depart from?
Sorong (SOQ), sometimes Waisai. Almost every private phinisi boards in Sorong and sails overnight.
Is snorkelling good in Raja Ampat?
Exceptional. Melissa’s Garden, Manta Sandy’s shallows and the Fam channels are all better from the surface than most places are from depth.
What is the best month?
Within the October to April window, conditions are broadly good throughout. Choose on availability and price rather than chasing a perfect month that does not exist.
