Fly to Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok, SOQ) and board your phinisi there. Sorong is roughly three and a half to four and a quarter hours from Jakarta, about two hours from Makassar and around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Manado. The fast ferry on to Waisai takes about two hours with a morning and an afternoon sailing, but on a private charter you rarely need it — the boat comes to you. Whichever route you take, sleep in Sorong the night before. Papua is not a place to arrive with no margin.

Two practicalities follow from those numbers. First, from Bali or Europe you are looking at an overnight itinerary with at least one connection, which is why arrival day is a rest day rather than a sightseeing day. Second, the Papua time zone is UTC+9 — two hours ahead of Bali — so an 06:00 landing in Sorong feels like 04:00 to a body that just left Denpasar.
Do you board in Sorong or Waisai?
On a private phinisi charter, almost always Sorong. The vessel positions itself in Sorong for embarkation, takes on fuel, water and provisions there, and sails overnight or through the morning to the Dampier Strait. That saves you the ferry entirely.
Waisai matters if you are combining a charter with homestay nights on Waigeo, if you are joining a boat mid-itinerary, or if a schedule change puts the vessel in the regency seat. The fast ferry from Sorong takes about two hours, typically with one morning and one afternoon sailing. Timetables change, and sailings are cancelled in bad weather — another argument for the buffer night.

Where do you stay the night before?
Sorong has a functional selection of business hotels rather than resorts — clean, air-conditioned, close to the harbour, with restaurants attached. That is all you need for eight hours of sleep and a shower. Book ahead in the October–April main season, because liveaboard turnaround days concentrate demand on the same few Saturdays.
If your flight lands at 05:00 and your boat boards at 14:00, ask the hotel for an early check-in or a day-use room. It is cheap and it transforms the first day aboard.
Cash, connectivity and the permit counter
- Cash. Draw rupiah in Sorong. ATMs exist in Sorong and in Waisai, but the network is thin and machines run dry around holidays. Once you are in the islands there is effectively nothing.
- SIM cards. Buy at the airport or in town. Coverage is reasonable around Waigeo and Waisai, patchy in the Dampier Strait, and essentially absent around Misool and Wayag. Tell people at home that you will be offline.
- Marine park permit. The PIN card is sold at the tourism counters in Sorong and Waisai. On a charter, the operator’s ground agent normally buys it against your passport details. - Pharmacy. Basic supplies are available in Sorong. Anything specific — prescription medication, particular seasickness remedies, spare contact lenses — must come with you.

When should you come?
Raja Ampat’s main season is October to April, when the seas are calmest. From June to September the south-east monsoon brings stronger winds that affect exposed sites, particularly around Misool. That is close to the mirror image of Komodo’s calendar, and it is the single most useful fact for anyone trying to build a two-region trip.

Is a buffer night in Sorong really necessary?
Yes. The connections are long, the frequencies are thin, and a missed leg on a separate ticket has no protection. One night removes the entire risk.

Papua runs on UTC+9, two hours ahead of Bali and Jakarta. Factor it into your first morning.
Can I combine Raja Ampat with Komodo in one trip?
